The holidays have passed. We’ve celebrated New Year and Christmas, and of course, we also haven’t left Old New Year aside. Somewhere between all these festive events we got back to work, solved all the burning issues and, finally, had time for reflection.
Following the old New Year tradition in Russia, people recap what happened during the past year and make plans for the coming one. But I was quite late with it. To be honest, my biggest wish on the 31st of December, 2017, was to have some decent sleep. And thank you, Santa (or Father Frost), my dream came true.
And now, in the beginning of February, we can enjoy planning to our heart’s content, think clearly and formulate things better. Then, we can greet another holiday in a little while, this time, Chinese New Year.
In fact, a life of an architect means never-ending planning. It’s the foundation. The process of planning, figuring out how to organize a space, is what the magic of designing starts from. I have to confess, this project phase is my favorite. It’s always a jigsaw puzzle that has to be solved, and when all the tiny details come to their places and we get a picture of a future interior, I feel like a happy child. And it happens every time! None of the following steps of a project excite me that much. Because, after all, it is not so important, a vase of what color will stand on a windowsill. What’s important is that people who will live in this space will feel comfortable every day. Everything else is the details. I guess that was my love for puzzles that turned into a passion for the planning of small spaces, where every centimeter has to be used in the most efficient way.
Since the new unspoken motto of the studio for new, 2018 year, sound like: “Big changes come, great things await us”, I believe, this is how it is going to be. So I am planning and wishing for many interesting, and, what’s important, diverse projects. Though we hardly ever get bored, with this job that we have! Miracles and surprises of any kind happen every day, any way. Just imagine, for example: in the middle of demolition works at the construction site there is a tiny spot in the corner, covered with a curtain, and there people cook and sell most popular fast-food in town.
And that’s a real story. So this job is definitely interesting!
And for being diverse – new tasks that require unconventional solutions, big sites and small sites, research and development of new directions – it’s what makes up our everyday life. It keeps us on our toes and gives us satisfaction.
Still, planning is good, but all the plans should be carried out. At this moment we have all the time for big steps, brave decisions, and victories. Then, on the 31st of December, 2018, we can look back to the past 364 days and say, “That was amazing!”
